Maintain your gear to keep your EDC pack mission
Your everyday packisn’t just a storage,it’s your base of operations. From urban commutes and range days to international travel and outdoor trails, your gear carries what matters most.
After investing time in choosing the right pack for your lifestyle, protecting that investment should be part of your preparedness mindset. Like any purpose-builttool, regular backpack maintenance ensures peak performance, durability, and reliability when you need it most.
A simple routine 1-3 times per year makes a real difference: completely emptyyour pack, remove inserts and organizers, shake out debris, and inspect seams, webbing, hardware, and zippers in good lighting. Catching small issues early prevents larger problems later. Always follow the manufacturer’s Product Careguidelines for your specific fabrics or parts. With just a few simple habits, yourgear will stay clean, reliable, and ready for every adventure ahead.
Zipper care is critical , because repairs are costly and limited!
First thing first: Zippers are one of the most critical components of any backpack, and also the most expensive, time-consuming to repair. While we use only genuine YKK®zippers, even the highest-quality zippers can fail if misused or neglected.
Common causes of zipper damage include forceful pulling, lifting a loaded bag bythe zipper pulls, overpacking, and repeated contact with abrasive or sharpobjects. Zippers are not load-bearing components and should never support theweight of a bag.
Zipper repairs are costly, because zippers are built deep into a bag’s structure, failure often requires taking apart the entire bag and replacing the entire zipper assembly. This process must be done at the factory with specialized equipment and often cannot be performed locally in the U.S., making repairs costly and time-consuming.
To help extend zipper life:
● Keep zippers clean and free of dirt, sand, and grit. No aftermarket lubricantsneeded.
● Avoid sharp or abrasive items contacting the zipper (inside or out).
● Do not overstuff or force oversized items that place outward pressure on thezipper.
● Be gentle. Never lift or carry a loaded bag by the zipper. Zippers are not load-bearing components.
Most Vanquest packs use reversed YKK zippers, which reduce external wear, butinternal abrasion can still cause damage. Take care of your zippers, and your packwill take care of you for years to come.
Brush off dirt and dust to protect fabrics and parts.
Brushing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain your backpack. These simple tools, whether a boot brush, boar’s hairbrush, paintbrush, or even a toothbrush, help remove dirt and grit before they embed into the fabric. Clearing surface dirt early prevents premature wear on materials and stitching, especially on durable packs designed for everyday carry, travel, and outdoor use.
Always start with a completely empty bag after shaking out loose debris. Avoid metal or wire brushes that can cause damage; use only brushes with soft nylon, plastic, or natural-hair bristles.
For deeper cleaning, compressed air or an air nozzle works well to blow debrisout of seams, webbing, and hard-to-reach areas. Follow up with a vacuum insideand out. This method is especially helpful for larger equipment-bearing packs like the MARKHOR-45 backpack, where dirt can hide in nooks, webbing channels, andtight crevices that are easy to miss with a brush.
Spot - clean fabric stains and preserve water resistance.
Spilled coffee on your GOFER-15 messenger bag? No worries! Spot cleaning is a normal part ofgear maintenance.Simple, targeted cleaning keeps your packlooking sharp without compromising its structure or performance.
Vanquest packs are built with protective fabric coatings designed to resistmoisture and lightspills, but prompt spot cleaning prevents stains from setting and keeps your bag looking its best.
For most situations, there’s no need to clean the entire bag. Instead, use a milddetergent such as castile soap,or a 10:1 diluted Simple Green solution and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently clean only the affected area, rinse with clean water, and allow the bag to air dry in a well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight. This targeted approach preserves fabric strength, color, and water-repellent performance while keeping maintenance simple.
If you notice water no longer beading on the fabric surface after extended use,you may reapply a spray-on DWR (Durable Water Repellent)fabric protector to help restore weather resistance.
Avoid machine - washing and tumble - drying your backpack
Machine washing and tumble drying are some of the fastest ways to damage your pack.Aggressive agitation and high heat create friction that wears downfabric coatings, stresses seams, and damages webbing, hardware, and foam structure. Trapped moisture inside padding and layered panels can lead to mildew, odor, and long-term breakdown.
Modern packs, including structured designs like the TRIDENT-21 backpack, are built with multiple layers of Cordura®, foam padding, ripstopnylon, and loop lining.Fully drying these layers after machine washingis VERY difficult, and mildew could form between those layers with trapped moisture.
Heat, aggressive detergents, and heavy solvents can also degrade Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coatings, reducing weather resistance and overall performance. When in doubt, avoid machines and spot-clean with intention.
